Early in
the morning we leave Angeles City (or the end point of a previous travel
module). We drive through the rice fields and the hill- and mountain landscapes
of the provinces of Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya and Ifugao. In the late
afternoon we arrive in Banaue. We visit the viewpoint and look over the more
then 2000 year old rice terraces.
These rice
terraces are called “The Eight Wonder of the World”, and also called “The
Stairway To Heaven”. The more than 2000 years old rice terraces are placed on
the world heritage list of Unesco. You have the opportunity to see, and if you
want to buy, the handmade souvenirs which are made by the mountain tribes.
The next
day we visit the Hapao rice terraces and the hot water spring. The Ifugao were
once the feared headhunters who built many years ago these rice terraces with
the aid of very few tools.
After breakfast we visit one of the most
beautifull rice terraces Batad. For the strong hikers we can continue to the
waterfalls. The local population will give you a warm welcome, and we will see
how they live here.
After a 3
hours drive we make a visit to the small, but interesting Bontoc museum. This
museum was established by a Belgian non. Here you can see the culture- and
daily tools of the Toradja- en Dajak-tribes. These tribes come originally from
Indonesia and were until two generations ago headhunters. We leave for the town
Sagada which is at 1480 meters high. In the Sagada weaving and Souvenirs shop,
we can watch weaving by hand from the traditional materials.
Our local
experienced guide brings us in the caves of Sagada with its many macabre
coffins. Of course our purpose is not collecting the skeleton bones of the dead
as souvenirs. We respect the remains of the dead. A mystery, and unique in the
world, are the hanging coffins on the mountain walls. We also visit echo
valley, the underground river or the Bokong waterfalls, a walk of about 20
minutes.
Tonight we
stay in the bizar, Mapiyaaw Sagada Pension with rock formations and beautiful
garden surroundings or in the middle of the small town. From the balcony you
can enjoy the beautiful landscape and colorful sunset. The road from Sagada to
Baquio over the Van Halsema Mountain Highway is a big adventure. If we are
lucky we can make an average speed of 25 kilometer an hour on the 130 kilometer
long road. The more then 5 hour drive brings us straight through the
breathtaking landscape of the Cordillera mountains, an adventurous experience
you will not easily forget.
This tour
is ideal as connection to the ”100 Islands and San Fabian Tour”. The ”Baguio,
La Union and Vigan Tour” are excellent to continue with.
